Ten foods to NEVER feed your baby (From a Dietitian)
You may have heard that some foods are okay for babies to eat, but did you know there are some that are actually not good or unsafe for them?
This is not a comprehensive list, but includes some of the foods that are not recommended.
-Whole apple is not recommended because it can break off into a chokable sized chunk. Ensure you are giving your baby safe sizes and textures of foods.
-Popcorn can lodge in a baby's throat very quickly. This also includes other Hard, round-shaped foods like whole nuts and grapes.
-Hard Candy is another choking hazard and also contains sugar which is not recommended for babies.
-Honey (or foods containing honey) may contain Clostridium botulinum, a dangerous bacteria that can cause infant botulism. No honey until your baby is one year old.
-Sunny side-up eggs and other undercooked foods put babies at risk from salmonella because it is undercooked.
-Swordfish and other fish high in mercury are not recommended. Mercury can affect your baby's nervous system development.
-Salami is a type of cured meat that is made from uncooked fermented meat, and this can pose a danger to babies because of an increased risk of listeriosis. All
-Brie Cheese is made from unpasteurized milk and therefore is unsafe for babies due to the risk of listeriosis.
-Cow’s milk is not recommended as a beverage for babies since it can be hard for an infant to digest, and it does not contain enough of nutrients that babies under a year-old need. Small amounts of cow’s milk protein (ex. yogurt, cheese) should be introduced from 6 - 12 months several times per week to reduce the risk of a severe allergy later in life.
-Fruit juice is not recommended due to the high sugar content and low nutrient content. It can displace an infants appetite for breast milk, formula or food. It can also cause tooth decay, diarrhea, and other tummy troubles
Key Points:
Unpasteurized milk, cheeses, and deli meats that have NOT been treated at high temperatures are unsafe for babies because of the risk of listeriosis. In addition, most smoked and cured meats contain nitrates, high amounts of salt, and other chemicals.
