Why does my cute cat have this on his back?

I came down to feed the barn cats today and found that our orange cat, Tony, had more stripes on his back. Every time it gets below freezing these marks/stripes appear on his back and I'm not sure why. He might be sleeping a certain way, rubbing up against something, rolling around. I'm not sure how he has them, what do you guys think?
