What are these cats doing in this straw?

I went down to take care of the chickens and cats, and found out that while I was putting straw inside their coop they started sniffing it and running all around. I'm not sure why they started sniffing it, they must've thought there was a rat or mouse inside they had to catch. If you have cats and your cats start doing the same thing while you put straw down, tell me why you think they do it.
